A Child Loaned<\/p>\n

“I’ll lend you for a little time
\nA child of Mine.” HE said.
\n“For you to love the while she lives
\nAnd mourn for when she’s dead.
\nIt may be six or seven year
\nOr twenty-two or three
\nBut will you, till I call her back
\nTake care of her for Me?
\nShe’ll bring her charms to gladden you
\nAnd should her stay be brief,
\nYou’ll have her lovely memories
\nAs solace for your grief.
\nI cannot promise she will stay
\nSince all from Earth return,
\nBut there are lessons taught down there
\nI want the child to learn.
\nI’ve looked this wide world over
\nIn my search for teacher’s true,
\nAnd from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes,
\nI have selected you;
\nNow will you give her all your love,
\nNor think the labor vain
\nNor hate Me when I come to call
\nAnd take her back again?<\/p>\n

I fancied that I heard them say,
\n“Dear Lord, Thy will be done,
\nFor all the joy Thy child shall bring,
\nFor the risk of grief we’ll run.
\nWe’ll shelter her with tenderness,
\nWe’ll love her while we may,
\nAnd for the happiness we’ve known,
\nForever grateful stay.
\nBut should the angels call for her
\nMuch sooner than we planned,<\/p>\n

We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes
\nAnd try to understand.”
