Our avocados get cuke sized and then form black, mushy bottoms before falling off the tree. What causes this? Unfortunately, this sounds like avocado bud mite. It has been a problem in So. Ca. for the last 3 years and is likely a result of the odd weather we’ve been having. There are currently no proven control measures for the problem. It is caused by a miniscule mite that feeds on the forming bud, causing the distortion. A narrow range 415 oil sprayed pre-bloom may help, but thorough coverage is required. If your tree is too large, it may be possible to spray just the lower portion of the tree in order to get some fruit.
